Don't Go Overboard

If you had told me five years ago that I could wear one print and then add stripes, I would have said no way.  Needless to say, I couldn't have been more wrong.  Combining prints to create a cohesive outfit is one of my favorite things to do.  It's like putting together a puzzle--I pick one pattern I want to work with and experiment with other prints until I'm satisfied with the end result.  It opens up a multitude of options and pairings I wouldn't have thought would work so I'm able to shop my own closet with fresh eyes.

Mixing prints can be tricky, though.  It's so easy to go wrong and end up looking sloppy. Today I wanted to show a simple pairing--miniature anchors with stripes.  Notice how the color story is the same, navy blue and white.  Sure, I could have thrown on a solid navy blazer, but this is more visually interesting.  Because they share the same colors, it's a very subtle mixed-print outfit.  You can go as loud as you want with this, but I wanted to demonstrate the softer side in case you were thinking you couldn't pull it off yourself.  The trick is to look chic, no crazy!  You don't have to go overboard with it.
