Playing with proportions is essentially a balancing act, whether you're working with patterns or volume or fit. If you get it wrong, you may end up looking off-kilter. Let's keep a few things in mind to ensure we always look our best.
1. Balance out volume with skinnier silhouettes. More or less, what I'm wearing today. If you're wearing a billowy top, then wearing skinny bottoms is a safe bet. Nothing good can come of being completely shapeless. The same goes for if you were wearing something voluminous on the bottom, like a maxi skirt, then a fitted blouse would give you the most flattering shape.
2. Pair opposite lengths together. Wearing long with short and short with long is a great way to balance proportion. Try wearing a short dress with a long cardigan. Or vice versa, a cropped jacket over a longer piece.
3. When in doubt, belt it. I love adding a belt--it creates an instant hourglass figure. A nipped waist is one of the biggest favors you could do for yourself and the most flattering of silhouettes. If you're unsure whether an outfit is making you look frumpy or not, reach for that belt and cinch in that waist, ladies.
