Closet Remix: Dotted Denim

I'm guest blogging on Style Isle for my blogger buddy, Tash, as part of her "American Beauty" series!  Check out her blog for more style inspiration.

Sometimes it pays off to shop in your own closet.  This skirt is one of my all time favorites--the color is amazing and I'm a sucker for pockets.  I bought this tee around the same time but it sat in my closet, new with tags, forgotten amongst everything else.  Crazy, right?  After a little closet clean-out, I rediscovered a few pieces that certainly deserved their day in the spotlight.  Even though I had owned these two separates for quite some time, I never thought to pair them together.  I managed to create an outfit I've never worn before without spending a dime.  That's a beautiful thing.

Long skirts are at the top of their class this year, making them a perfect addition to your back-to-school wardrobe.  It's a stylish way to be comfortable, while abiding by those pesky dress codes.  I wanted to pair this terry sweatshirt with something different so I just tucked it in here.  I love the floral anchor and pulled out some colors from there for my accessories.

Bloom Brightly

I'm a sucker for a good print and as the days get a little shorter, I'm making the most of them by wearing all my summer outfits!  As we transition to fall, I'm mindful to look for things that can carry on into the next season.  This dress is perfect for a summer date night, but if I add tights, cognac boots and a nude blazer, I'm ready for the cooler autumn months.  While the bright turquoise reads summer, the golden russet colors will allow me to tie it into my fall looks.

Summertime is coming to an end and one of the best things to do is to catch the sunrise at the beach.  It's quite a sight to behold as the sun slowly peeks out of the horizon and makes its ascent, painting everything in a golden glow.  It's chilly in the morning so wear something to keep warm, like this striped terry cover-up.  Wearing shorts is perfect for dipping your toes in the warm waters of late summer.  I hope you guys get a chance to experience this view for yourselves!

Fringe Benefits

A microtrend that emerged from the runways for fall is folk-inspired elements--ornate prints, rich colors and detailed embroidery.  Taking cues from around the globe, ethnic prints, like intricate needlepoint from Asian countries or traditional Russian costumes, are perfect for a trendy jet-setter.  It's easy enough to take a printed dress with a great print and pair it with fringed booties.  Adding a vibrant mustard yellow mimics the colors of fall.

Change Your Stripes

To transition shorts into fall, just layer up!  Since it's not too chilly out yet, you can get away with a nice cardigan over a tank.  When it does get to be that time, I plan on wearing these shorts with tights (see what I mean here).  Since the stripes in the cardigan and the top are different sizes but the same color, the prints mixed well without competing with each other.

Mixed Media

More is more when it comes to fabric for Fall (if you missed my Fall Trends 2013, check it out here).  Not only can we afford to layer different textures to keep warm, but we're also seeing pieces that incorporate mixed materials.  These ponté leggings sneak in a little edge with the faux leather inserts.  The side paneling gives the illusion of legs for days (a girl can dream) so throw on a pair of booties in the same color to further elongate the leg.

When you're torn between embracing the new fall trends or clinging to the happy colors of summer, it's perfectly acceptable to mix in a little of both.  Choose a pop of color to compliment a darker bottom--in this case a rosebud printed skort (yes, skort!)  A true nod the fall, the oxfords are classic but by switching out the laces for another pop of color, it's something unexpected and fun.

Hot Trends Fall/Winter 2013

If summer is wearing you out and you're already reaching for those dark lipsticks and chunky sweaters (complete with a pumpkin spice latte) then it's time to start planning for the very near future.  Scroll through to take a look at the top trends that emerged from the runway and shop the links below.

1. Block Party
Ease into fall with color-blocked brights against crisp neutrals.

Top: Sheinside // Pants: Sheinside // Boots: Aldo //Clutch: Sheinside // Necklace: Aldo // Watch: Kate Spade // Sunnies: Karen Walker // Nails: Essie "A Crewed Interest" // BB Cream: Maybelline Dream Fresh // Lip Gloss:  TopShop "Witty" //

2. Mixed Material
Try to find pieces that incorporate different fabrics--like a boucle jacket with leather inserts. It gives an otherwise lady-like silhouette a bit of an edge.

Top: Selected // Jacket: Rebecca Taylor // Pants: Scotch & Soda // Clutch: Sheinside // Bracelet: Kate Spade // Shoes: Nine West // Necklace: Sheinside // Scarf: Pieces // Gloves: Mango // Sunnies: Sarah A Gili // Beanie: BP // Nails: Butter London "Billy No Mates" //

3. Emerald City
Pantone's color of the year was emerald so it's no surprise it was all over the fall runways. Pair emerald with other jewel toned colors to really make a statement.

Dress: Sheinside // Shoes: Ted Baker // Purse: Sheinside // Watch: Kate Spade // Bangles: J. Crew // Earrings: Sheinside // Eyeshadow: Bare Minerals // Nails: Illamasqua "Poke // Lips: Hourglass "Fever" //

4. Out-there Outerwear
Invest in eye-catching outerwear. Don't be afraid to experiment with different colors and textures this season!

Dress: Sheinside // Jacket: Sheinside // Scarf: Sperry // Bag: Fossil // Shoes: Dorothy Perkins // Watch: F21 // Glasses: Warby Parker // Nails:  RGB "Too Red" //

5. Classic Prints
Houndstooth goes with absolutely everything. Embrace these classic prints in menswear-inspired blazers, pants, and skirts. Also, say hello to your favorite layering piece this season--the turtleneck!

Blazer: Dinou // Turtleneck: EA7 // Shorts: Topshop // Shoes: Gucci // Watch: Michael Kors // Bracelet: Oscar de la Renta // Lip Gloss: Bare Escentuals "Daredevil" // Nails:  Topshop "Rumors and Lies" // Eyeshadow: Smashbox //

  6. Military Grade
The presence of all things military was strong on the runways. Khaki green is a great way to incorporate the trend, but pair it with luxe feminine pieces--like lace or faux fur.

Jacket: Tom Ford // Tank: Stussy // Jeans: Boohoo // Boots: Pacsun // Necklace: Sheinside // Beanie: Topshop // Fur Scarf: Stylebop // Gloves: Tory Burch // Sunnies: Zero UV // Lipstick: Tom Ford "Bruised Plum" //
