An Oxford Education

I love the idea of an oxford shoe because they're typically found in menswear.  For women, however, it translates far less formal.  I wouldn't wear my oxfords with a suit, for instance--leave that to the boys.  Wear them with your favorite jeans rolled up or with dresses and skirts for a quirky alternative to sandals.   As it gets colder, we can add tights to keep warm.  In the meantime, I'm all for a little ankle intrigue! It keeps it fun and feminine.

Fall 2013 Lip Shades

Perhaps you've been wary of the statement lip trend thus far but it may be time to rethink your apprehension as the runways for fall prove this trend is sticking around.  As we shelf our barely-there balms and lip glosses, we turn to rich, full-bodied lipsticks.  So which shades should you go for?

Fall Lip Shades

Nudes: MUFE "Matte Caramel" TOO FACED "Spice Spice Baby" // Pinks: YSL "Rose Culte" BITE BEAUTY "Vidal" // Reds: HOURGLASS "Icon" GUERLAIN "Habit Rouge" // Plums: MARC JACOBS "Little Pretty" TOM FORD "Bruised Plum"

  • Au Naturale:  A fresh faced, "no-makeup" make up is always right on trend.  Look for my-lips-but-better shades that are one to two shades darker than your natural lip color to avoid looking washed out.
  • Bold Pinks:  Think of fuchsia's and bright berry shades as fall's answer to hot pink.  It's bright but with more purple undertones than the cool blue undertones of summer.
  • Red Wine: While all shades of red are perfectly acceptable (I'm partial to those bright, tomato red's myself), the quintessential deep, rich burgundy is a fall staple year after year.  Texture is as important as color so experiment with velvety mattes and high-shine glosses.
  • Purple Plums:  Perhaps the most daring choice of this bunch, deep purples have carved out a niche for themselves this season.  It may look crazy in the tube but try it on for size--it's dramatic and universally flattering.  Just remember to keep the rest of the face relatively neutral.

Denim on denim doesn't have to look like you're off to the rodeo.  Dark skinny jeans and a light chambray shirt is the perfect backdrop for any--and I mean ANY--outfit.  For an effortless weekend look, cuff those jeans and opt for these slip-on's by Victoria Footwear.  Their classic design pairs well with the double denim but packs a subtle punch with this playful rose color.

The most intimidating piece in your wardrobe today: the crop top.  While some are showing off their enviably toned abs, the reality is that the rest of us may or may not be comfortable showing off our midriff's.  But it's easy enough to play with proportions to control how much we put on display.  Like this high-waisted midi skirt allows for a sliver of skin to peek through--still sexy but completely appropriate.  A denim jacket or any other men's cut blazer helps to break up figure-hugging look.  There are no rules to how many inches you should show so go with what you're comfortable with!
