Primp // Why You DON'T Need To Contour

If you open up Pinterest or YouTube, you're bound to run into more than a few contouring tutorials.  Ask any industry professional and they'll tell you contouring has been around for ages.  But recently, there's been an obsessive rage to to carve out cheekbones and give your nose a thinner appearance.  You'll see all the beauty brands bringing out contouring powders, sticks, creams, etc--because they're flying off the shelves at an alarming rate.

Contouring is giving shape to an area of the face and enhancing the facial structure through makeup.  It's not supposed to be noticeable—just a subtle definition.  It's all about the artistry and illusion.  Contouring and highlighting, when done right, looks absolutely amazing in photography.  So if you're Kim Kardashian and have a camera crew following you at every turn, then it makes sense to look picture perfect.  Or if you're a model in studio lighting, where everything can be controlled to flatter you best.  There are certainly alot of benefits, but there are also a lot of reasons I don't think we should include it in our daily makeup routine.

Eat // Vegan Loco Moco Recipe (featuring the Vegg)

I made this for Memorial Day Brunch yesterday at home for my family and decided to make a quick blog post about it--not because this is the best vegan egg dish I've ever had but because this is something new and different in the world of imitating eggs.  I'm genuinely impressed by the Vegg and its many uses.  It's 100% plant-based and claims to mimic the texture and taste of eggs to replace it in a multitude of recipes, like scrambled eggs or even a hollandaise sauce.  

The coolest part is the bit of molecular gastronomy used to create the spherical egg yolk.  It takes some practice to get it right but it's much easier than it sounds.  You can watch this video to learn more about this process.  The Vegg is available for purchase on Amazon.  While you're at it, throw this and this in the cart, if you're planning to recreate the recipes in their book--the recipes are more technical and scientific than your average dishes.

Product Review // Cover FX Custom Cover Drops

Foundation has come such a long way since I first started dabbling in make-up as a teenager (probably in the form of Cover Girl's powder compact that was a few shades too light for me). I can never test too many base products because it's the most important part of my make-up, for whatever look I may be going for.  If you get a long lasting, undetectable foundation in the right shade, then the rest of your makeup is a piece of cake. I like to mix products to get just the right concoction for my skin. Lookbook // The Best Online Memorial Day Sales

Product Review // Mario Badescu Botanical Exfoliating Scrub

I've never met a Mario Badescu product I didn't like and it looks like the streak continues with their new face scrub--Botanical Exfoliating Scrub.  I like a good scrub in the shower a few times a week but what always turns me off are the micro-lacerations they cause--you know, those tiny cuts you don't know are there until you go to put on your toner or serum and it stings like a b****?  No one likes angry, red skin!

I am super lazy with my hair these days.  Years of using heat on my hair has finally caught up to me and I've been focusing on restoring it (applying coconut oil like my life depends on it).  For the most part, I only allow myself a curling iron on special occasions.  So I've been doing my research on the best of the best in terms of sea salt sprays to add texture and hold to my naturally wavy hair that doesn't dry it out or leave it feeling sticky or crunchy.

We all deserve to go some where we feel free.  To me, that is the ocean.  Life is just better in flip flops with a little sand between your toes.  The funny thing is that I can't swim!  Not even float but for some reason, the sea has always called my name and I never fight it.  Note to self: adult swimming lessons.

Product Review // Jaclyn Hill Favorites by Morphe Brushes

I wasn't going to do this post since the palette has been completely sold out BUT I've been so impressed with the quality of these shadows.  While you can't buy them in a palette like this, they are available as single eyeshadows individually.  The best part? They're $2 (!!!) a pop at Morphe Brushes.  What can you buy for two bucks these day?  A pack of gum maybe?

Wardrobe Staple // The Denim Shirt

I will admit that I have a lot of everything--shoes, jeans, make-up, sunglasses, jewelry, etc.  I consider it an occupational hazard of sorts, one that comes with the territory of 1. past job history of working in retail and 2. blogging about fashion and beauty.  Something I've always wanted for myself is living with less.  The idea appeals to my innate wandering gypsy soul since having more things tie you down.  There is freedom in owning less; we are not what we own, after all.  If I've learned anything this past year, it's that money spent on plane tickets and traveling is more meaningful than picking up a new shade of lipstick.

But I also have to be practical--I am as high maintenance as they come.  I like having two different shampoos in the shower (one for daily, one for clarifying...duh) and painting my nails every week with a face mask on is a sacred ritual.  Same with my closet--I like having options so I'm prepared for every occasion from weekend wear to last minute Met Gala invitation.  As I'm preparing for a little world travel (see here), I thought that I could find a realistic approach to a minimalistic wardrobe for a shopaholic (key word: REALISTIC).  So I'm starting a mini-series here on my wardrobe staples and what I absolutely could not do without.  Because let's be honest--if we're going to have less things, they have to be great things.

I've been completely obbessed with serums lately--thanks to Sali Hughes over at The Guardian (see here).  I've been using them on and off over the years but recently started doing my research on serums.  I'm diligently trialing my way through a few different ones but this one was a fast favorite and I'm on my second bottle already.
